8 Seconds

France, 2025, 79 min
Location: France, Germany
A Film by: Jean-Marie Vinclair

8 Seconds begins in 2005 when filmmaker Jean-Marie Vinclair discovers a relative, Raymond, who died in Germany during the Second World War yet remained unknown to his family. Years later, now married to a German woman and father of two, he returns to this unresolved story. With his family, he retraces Raymond’s path between France and Germany, following archives, places, and traces of a fragmented past. The film explores the transmission of memory across generations, confronting silence, absence, and the fragile links between personal history, collective memory, and identity over time.

A Film by: Robert Lemelson

The Sacrifice follows Ketut Sudiarta, who has lived with severe mental illness since childhood. His adulthood is marked by instability and violence, including wandering the streets, attacking his half-sister, incarceration, and hospitalization, while he also remains a friend and family member seeking a meaningful life. Participating in a long process of healing, he confronts actions he is seen as responsible for. This longitudinal ethnographic film is shot and narrated by Ketut’s childhood friend and explores the grief, concern, and culturally-informed meaning-making surrounding a deeply troubled life.
